Questions have been coming up about the proper PPE for handling children presenting with signs and symptoms of Enterovirus D68. So here in a nutshell is the answer -
1. This is a droplet transmitted illness. that means that the droplets can travel a distance of about 3 feet. A surgical mask should be used. Since the patient will most likely be coughing and in need of oxygen, the care provider should wear the surgical mask. However, note that this illness is mainly affecting children.
2. Standard Precautions should always be used as appropriate. Gloves when in contact with secretions, good handwashing and cleaning of the vehicle after transport.
No special cleaning solutions needed. No airing out of the vehicle is needed
Note - this is not a new disease. It is common every year between July and October. This is the largest outbreak thus far.
